New primary DNS Server (NS0.thex.uk.provider-one.net)

Today we have introduced a new Primary DNS Server (nameserver).  The new nameserver (ns0.thex.uk.provider-one.net) is the first deployment of 4 new primary and secondary name servers to accommodate the growth in the number of domain names we maintain on behalf of our customers.  The remaining 3 name servers will be deployed gradually over the next two/three weeks.

New LINX Peer - Internet Systems Consortium, Inc. (ISC)

Today we have added to new peer at LINX.  Internet Systems Consortium, Inc. (ISC) is a nonprofit public benefit corporation dedicated to supporting the infrastructure of the universal connected self-organizing Internet—and the autonomy of its participants—by developing and maintaining core production quality software, protocols, and operations.

ISC operates the “F” root domain server, one of the 13 Internet root name servers known as A-root through M-root. We have operated F-Root for IANA since 1994.  The addition of the direct peering relationship between Provider-one.net and ISC establishes faster response times for DNS queries.

LINX Maintenance - Quagga/Kernel Upgrade on route-server rs1.linx.net

End: 2009-04-15 05:15:00 BST (UTC + 1)

INTRODUCTION
In light of the recent instabilities seen on the Route-Servers on the Brocade peering-LAN we have decided to go ahead with

(a) A scheduled Kernel upgrade
(b) Upgrade Quagga/BGPD to 0.99.11 where some bug fixes have been made
(c) Separate IPV4 and IPV6 configuration so 2 instances of BGPD are running.
(d) Configuration clean up in removing client configurations no longer in use.

This maintenance will be in two parts where parts (a) and (b) will be completed in this maintenance window. Parts (c) and (d) with be completed in another maintenance window to be later scheduled.

Cogent is the sixth Global IP Transit provider we have a direct connection with and the current lineup is as follows:

  • Level 3
  • Above.net
  • Global Crossing
  • KPN
  • Teleglobe
  • Cogent

We have also a connection at LINX with over 250 direct peering agreement in place such as Microsoft, PIPEX, Demon Internet, Plus.net and many many more.

Introduction of New outbound MX servers

We are moving towards a new model of centralised outbound MX servers to manage all outbound e-mail in a scalable and controllable manor. By centralising out bound e-mail service we can prevent spam based e-mail leaving our network.

To increase the protection for our customers the following policy is now in effect.

  • All domain names are limited to 500 messages per day (a higher volume than contracted amount of 200 messages per day).
  • All domain names are limited to 100 messages per hour to prevent spam floods
  • Outbound e-mail with no sender specified will be rejected
  • Outbound e-mail with the same sender and recipient will be rejected
  • Outbound e-mail with sender set to anonymous@[domain name] will be rejected
  • Outbound e-mail with sender set to nobody@[domain name] will be rejected

Expandsion of THEX Edge Switch 3-1 and 4-1

We have been working hard to increase to capacity and resiliency of Edge Switch 3-1 and 4-1 in Telecity Harbour Exchange (8&9).

Changes made:

  • Upgrade the switch interlinks (to core switches CS1 and CS2) from 2Gb/sec to 4Gb/Sec for Internet facing connections and 2Gb/sec to 4Gb/sec for Private communications.
  • Moved all servers located on the switch to have 1 x Gb/sec on each switch for Internet Facing communication and 1 x Gb/sec on each switch for Private communication.
  • Moved all Lights Out Management connections to Edge Switch 4-2

Changes to be completed:

  • Introduce HSRP (Hot Standby Routing Protocol) on Edge Switch 3-1 and 4-1.
  • Introduce 3×2Gb/sec connection between Edge Switch 3-1 and 4-1
  • Add additional 1×1Gb from Edge switch 3-1 to 4-2

The above modification will be scheduled within the coming week.
